Don Diamond Gives 15M to Build Children’s Hospital in Tucson
Local real estate land baron and real estate developing icon of the Tucson area, Don Diamond, has given 15 million dollars of his own money to get a $55 million children’s hospital off the ground. This new children’s hospital, Diamond Children’s Medical Center, will also be a national player in children’s research and medical technology because it will be one of only a few national children’s hospitals across the Unites States. It is to be affiliated with the University of Arizona.
The hospital will combine clinical care for children with cutting-edge research on diseases that affect children and also train future pediatricians studying at the University of Arizona. The hospital is planned to be a 100,000 square foot addition to University Medical Center (UMC), the largest hospital in Tucson.
In the 1990’s, UMC tried to partner with another hospital to build a children’s hospital, but the plan never really came together and was dropped. In my opinion, this is one of the best things that could have happened in Tucson. Having a world-class children’s hospital will make Tucson an even more desirable place to live than it is currently. Diamond has made it possible to get a major project. It will be a jewel of the local area and soon will become a reality. Diamond has a history of not only completing big projects successfully, but of adding tremendous value to the Tucson area. He is one of the largest landowners in Arizona, and I believe he owns more Tucson area real estate than any other person through his Diamond Ventures real estate development company. Don Diamond is the developer of Dove Mountain and also developer and mastermind behind many, many other Tucson area communities and real estate developments.
