El Presidio

El Presidio boasts of being Tucson's oldest neighborhood. It was here that the Irish mercenary Hugo O'Conor established a presidio, or fort, in 1775 to help the Spanish ward off Apaches on this remote northern frontier of New Spain. The fort has long vanished, but 19th-century Mexican adobe row houses still overlook quite a few of the neighborhood's blocks. Situated just north of the downtown government hub, El Presidio has 80 contributing residences on 12 blocks, most dating from the mid-19th century to 1912, the year of statehood. Altered adobes — later inhabitants added pitched roofs and front porches — and craftsman houses split streets with law offices and brand-new row houses built in a traditional style.
