Near to downtown, immediately east of 4th Avenue and north of the tracks, sits the Iron Horse Historic District, an additional railroad district. Built from about 1890 to 1908, Iron Horse has constantly been a blend of rentals and small houses in various styles from Sonoran adobe to Queen Anne. The Southern Pacific rail employees who lived here during that era had to obey the "one mile rule" — the train company required them to live close enough to hear the whistle blow, calling them into work. At the present time there are 178 contributing properties.
