John Spring has constantly enjoyed ethnic diversity. Positioned west of Stone Avenue just north of downtown, it was home to Yaqui Indians, Mexicans, Chinese, and African-Americans by 1900. Following the opening of Tucson's segregated elementary school here in 1917, the district attracted numerous middle-class black families. Constructed typically between 1896 and 1917, the district has a blend of reserved adobes and more sophisticated brick houses. These days, the old school is being renovated as a museum and cultural center.
