The Pie Allen Neighborhood of Tucson Arizona was named in honor of John "Pie" Allen. He was renowned for his dried-apple pies during frontier days, when fresh fruit was very difficult to come by. The pies were such a tremendous hit in Southern Arizona that his pies led Allen to become a local entrepreneur and eventually the mayor of Tucson. Allen opened trading posts and post offices from Bisbee to Wickenburg. Tombstone Arizona's famous Allen Street, scene of the OK Corral gunfight, is also named in his honor. These twenty-four historic blocks in the Pie Allen Neighborhood, just west of the University of Arizona are representative of Tucson's building boom in the late 1800's. Several buildings were designed by Tucson's best known architect, Josias Joesler. These homes are generally limited and can vary greatly in price since some properties have been revitalized and others are still in need of updates and repairs.
